Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood Book 1) by J.R. Ward

3 Stars

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

I have no doubt that this series has some major fans. It's dark, dramatic, has romance, and the characters are like-able.
It starts off with Darius asking Wrath, the Blind King, to help his half-bred daughter through transition. Since Wrath is the last pure bred vampire he is sure Wrath would be strong enough to keep her alive through transition. Since Wrath is a loner and bit of an ass, he declines.
But when Darius is killed by lessers Wrath feels inclined to save his daughter.
When Wrath first sees Beth he is immediately drawn to her.
Through this book you start seeing a different side to Wrath and his brothers in the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Beth coming into their lives is probably the best thing that could happen for them.
During this book you see the lessers trying to build up their numbers so they can wipe out the Brotherhood. At one point their even kidnap Beth to draw Wrath in so they can kill him. No, it doesn't work. Of course!

All in all it's a pretty good book. I've already started on book 2. But I will say it's yet another series that just doesn't suck me in. It took me about a week to finally finish this book! That's way too long for me! I am hoping it gets even better so maybe I'll go through the series quicker than I am expecting at this point.
